Touch Rugby aka Junior Highlanders by Malcolm Dougall
The Junior Highlanders (ages 9-14) were formed three years ago when my two young sons decided they were keen to play. What started with just a handful of boys and girls and some supportive parents has since grown to a regular team of more than 20 committed players. The junior team is quickly becoming an integral part of out Highlanders Rugby development program. In 2009 eight of our original players graduated to play for our U15 rugby team.
We play "TOUCH" rugby, a fast-paced, non-contact version of the game that requires lots of unselfish team play but NO tackling. This version of rugby is designed to introduce kids of all shapes and sizes to basic rugby skills in a safe, friendly, fitness-oriented environment. Running, basic game strategy, ball skills, teamwork and learning to take instruction on the field are part of the menu. Anyone willing to invest their time and follow the guidelines is WELCOME TO JOIN.
Our regular junior players include coaches' kids, the siblings of past and present senior players and other friends and family members. Most of our juniors (and parents) play once and get hooked. Some of our older players help out with junior coaching, which is a great way to inspire responsibility and share in the positive Highlander team spirit. Rugby is a team sport and our juniors are learning to learn and achieve by working together.
